Hair fall – causes and remedies

Hair plays a significant role in personal identity and self-esteem, often serving as a key aspect of individual appearance and style. Hair fall caused by either of the following causes;

  1. Genetics: Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness, is hereditary and the most common cause of hair loss.
    1. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal imbalances due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or thyroid issues can cause hair loss.
    2. Medical Conditions: Conditions such as alopecia areata (an autoimmune disorder that attacks hair follicles), scalp infections, and diseases like lupus can result in hair loss.
    3. Medications: Certain drugs used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, and high blood pressure can cause hair loss.
    4. Nutritional Deficiencies: A lack of essential nutrients such as iron, protein, and vitamins can lead to hair loss.
    5. Physical or Emotional Stress: Significant stress or trauma can cause temporary hair loss known as telogen effluvium.
    6. Nutritional Deficiencies: Excessive styling, tight hairstyles, and harsh treatments like hot oil or perms can lead to hair damage and loss.
    7. Aging: As people age, hair naturally tends to thin.
    8. Environmental Factors: Exposure to pollutants and chemicals can damage hair and cause it to fall out.

Now the question is can we protect our hair?

The answer can yes or no – completely depends on the cause. We have limitations in preventing hair fall if it is triggered by genetics, for example. However, we can prevent hair fall if it is triggered by stress, poor hair care, hormonal changes, or nutritional deficiencies by making some lifestyle changes.

  • Healthy Diet: Ensure a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc, vitamin D, and biotin. Foods like eggs, nuts, spinach, and fish are beneficial for hair health.
  • Avoid Tight Hairstyles: Reduce the use of tight hairstyles like ponytails and braids that can pull on the hair and lead to breakage.
  • Stress Management: Practice stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise to help mitigate hair loss related to stress
