Now, you know what is macros and how do you get it, as I explained in previous blog about diet. If not, please do read it.
The food that you eat will break down into macros such as carbohydrates, fats and protein. They are the fuel for our body with different type of functions. So it is important that you include the food which has optimal levels of macronutrients. A healthy diet contains optimal level of both macronutrients (something like 40% carbohydrates, 40% protein, 20% fats) and micronutrients

Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy for the body. Because it can be easily break down as glucose and pass to blood stream. The glucose will be absorbed to the cells using the insulin as the key (don’t think too much on insulin, will discuss later) and this will fuel the cells and hence the body.
Excess glucose will be stored as fat under the skin, to be utilised later incase of emergency situation of body like – keeping us alive in case of starvation of food.
Proteins
This is the term you might’ve heard a lot on internet and I’m sure that most the marketing will be from online shopping or supplement marketing teams.
Understand that the term protein, it is a kind of macronutrient that you get from food you eat. Most of the food you eat has some level of protein.
Just like carbohydrates, proteins is another type of macro that will be converted into different types of amino acids and pushed to blood stream. This amino acids helps body to regulate gene expression, arrange the cells , regulate immune system and repair damaged muscle cells.
Fats
This is the another term that you might’ve heard wrong. Because most of us has a belief that fats are harmful to the body and that will make us obese. Let’s understand the facts about fats
There’re 2 different types of fat, you will get from a food that you consume:
- Healthy fats
- Trans fats
The healthy fats are essential for the body and it has the following functions
- Cardiovascular strengthening
- Store energy
- Protect our vital organs
- Helping proteins to do their jobs
- Maintaining cholesterol and blood pressure levels
Trans fats are the fat that actually doesn’t need to our body and makes our body worst. Because it has lots of downsides to our health that includes heart problems. Because these will be stored in your blood vessels as cholesterol or bad fats, eventually this will be a blockage in your blood vessels.
Most of the fast food contains the trans fats only, and this is why people having fast food is obese and live with tons of health issues.
You can get good fats from food such as nuts, unsweetened butters, walnuts, fishes etc.
Takeaway
- Each and every type of macronutrient has its own functions its body. So we need to make sure we are having sufficient amount of all three macronutrients in our diet.
